How to Choose the Right Body Size for Your Chassis
The right lorry body isn't just about length, it's about matching size and weight to what your specific chassis can safely carry.
Why Body Size Is a Weight Question, Not Just a Length Question
Choosing a lorry body size isn't simply picking a length that looks right for the chassis. Every chassis has a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR), the maximum total weight it's built to carry safely, including the chassis itself, the body, and the payload. Choosing a body that's too large or too heavy for the chassis eats into usable payload capacity and can put the vehicle over its rated weight before it's even loaded. Getting this right from the start protects both the vehicle and the cargo it's meant to carry.
Key Measurements That Determine the Right Fit
Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR): The maximum total weight the chassis is rated to carry. Your available payload is what's left after subtracting the chassis's own weight and the body's weight from this figure.
Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR): Each axle has its own maximum rated load. A body that places too much weight over one axle can overload it even if the total vehicle weight is within the overall GVWR.
Wheelbase: The distance between the front and rear axles. This affects how much body length the chassis can practically support and how the vehicle handles once loaded.
Cab-to-axle distance: The space between the back of the cab and the rear axle, which is a key reference point for determining appropriate body length for a given chassis.
Weight distribution: As a general guide, a well-balanced body and payload should place a majority of the weight forward of the rear axle centerline, rather than concentrated at the rear, this supports stable handling and even tyre wear.
Matching Body Type to Cargo, Not Just Chassis
Size isn't the only variable, the type of body matters just as much. A steel half body suited to heavy, dense cargo has different weight and space characteristics than a lightweight aluminium body built for high-volume, lower-density goods, even at a similar overall length. Choosing body type and size together, based on your actual cargo, gives a more accurate fit than sizing alone.

USRI's USE-series models are built across a range of standard sizes, giving you a starting reference point for common chassis and payload combinations before any custom sizing is considered.
Getting the Right Fit for Your Specific Chassis
Because GVWR, GAWR, wheelbase, and cab-to-axle dimensions vary by chassis make and model, the most reliable way to confirm the right body size is to share your chassis details when requesting a quote.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know what size lorry body my chassis can support?
It depends on your chassis's Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR), axle weight ratings, and wheelbase. These determine how much body weight and length the chassis can safely carry alongside your intended payload.
Does a bigger lorry body always mean more usable capacity?
No. A larger, heavier body reduces the payload capacity left within the chassis's GVWR. The right size balances body weight against the payload you actually need to carry.
What is cab-to-axle distance and why does it matter?
It's the distance from the back of the cab to the rear axle, and it's a key reference point for determining what body length a given chassis can properly support.
Can USRI help me determine the right body size for my chassis?
Yes. Sharing your chassis details when requesting a quote allows USRI to recommend a body size and type suited to your specific vehicle and cargo.
