New Lorry Buyer's Guide: The Chassis + Body Process

Unlike a passenger car, a new lorry typically comes to its owner in two separate stages. First, the bare chassis is purchased from an authorised vehicle distributor or dealer, this includes the engine, cab, and drivetrain, but no cargo-carrying body. Second, that chassis goes to a body builder to have a lorry body fitted, matched to the owner's intended cargo and payload requirements. Only once both stages are complete, and the vehicle is registered, is it road-ready for commercial use.

Once the chassis is selected, the next decision is body type and size, matched to the chassis's weight ratings and your cargo. USRI's product range covers the standard body types built in Sri Lanka, from aluminium and steel construction to enclosed containers and specialized builds.

A newly bodied lorry needs to be registered before entering commercial service. In Sri Lanka, this is handled through the Department of Motor Traffic, and new vehicle registration should be completed within a set period of purchase. Commercial lorries specifically require a valid fitness certificate from an approved testing centre, in addition to standard registration, insurance, and revenue licence requirements. Navigating this process alongside a new body build can be time-consuming, which is why having a body-building partner who can assist directly is valuable.
